A Nepalese Sherpa guide has died after falling into an ice crevice on Mount Everest, marking the third fatality in just two weeks on the world's highest mountain, Reuters reported on May 12.

Nepalese officials say that conflicts in the Middle East are affecting tourism and international travel, but Everest continues to attract a large number of climbers this season.

"Despite the conflict in the Middle East impacting tourism, trekking, and travel, Everest continues to attract an increasing number of climbers," said Himal Gautam, an official from the Nepal Tourism Board.

According to the Nepal Mountaineering Organizers Association, experienced climbing teams are finalizing the securing of ropes to the summit of Everest and expect to complete the work by the end of this week. This will allow expeditions to begin their journey if weather conditions permit.

Nepal currently opens over 400 peaks in the Himalayas to climbing, but most tourists focus on about 20 of the most famous, with Everest at 8,849 meters being the most popular destination.

During the climbing season, which runs from April to May this year, Nepal issued 492 Everest climbing permits at a fee of $15,000 per person. This number is an increase from the 478 permits issued in 2023 and exceeds the number for the following two years.

The latest fatality is Phura Gyaljen Sherpa, 21 years old. He slipped on the snow and fell into an ice crevice near Camp III at an altitude of about 7,200 meters, according to Nisha Thapa Rawat, a Nepalese tourism official.

Earlier this month, another Nepalese climber, Bijay Ghimire Bishwakarma, 35, died during acclimatization at the Khumbu Icefall on Everest. Lakpa Dendi Sherpa, 51, also died on the way to base camp earlier this month.

Besides Everest, two other deaths were reported in the Himalayan region last week. This brings the total number of fatalities this year's climbing season on Himalayan peaks in Nepal to five. Last month, a massive ice mass and numerous smaller ice fragments delayed the opening of the Everest climbing route for nearly two weeks, leaving hundreds stranded at the base camp.
