According to Cho Ray Hospital, on March 17, patient PAB, a British national, was admitted to the emergency room with immune thrombocytopenia on the basis of hypertension, very low platelet count, risk of cerebral hemorrhage, and needed urgent platelet transfusion. However, the patient has blood type O Rh(-) so it is difficult to choose the appropriate platelet concentrate for transfusion. The hospital's blood reserve has also run out of platelets for this blood type.
It is estimated that patients with the rare blood type O - Rhesus negative account for only about 0.1% of Vietnam's population.
Faced with the urgent situation, Cho Ray Blood Transfusion Center initiated emergency procedures and quickly contacted the Ho Chi Minh City Rare Blood Club and the Southern Rare Blood Club.

Immediately, 6 members of the 2 clubs put aside their work to go to the hospital to donate blood to save lives. After the screening process, 3 suitable members were selected to donate platelets.
After nearly 10 hours of implementing the red alert procedure, 03 standard O, Rhesus negative Platelet preparations were urgently produced and safely transfused to patient B, thereby saving the patient's life in time.
After nearly a week of combining many treatments, the patient recovered and was discharged from the hospital on March 23.
