At 11:45 a.m. on October 13 (around 4:45 p.m. Hanoi time), the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced the 2025 Nobel Prize in Economics to three scientists. They are Joel Mokyr from Northwestern University (USA), Peter Howitt from Brown University (USA) and Philippe Aghion, currently working at both INSEAD (France) and the London School of Economics and Political Science (UK). They were awarded the prize for their research on explaining economic growth based on innovative breakthroughs.

Mokyr's prize-winning work addresses "the conditions necessary for sustained growth through technological progress", while Aghion and Howitt were honoured for their "theory of sustainable growth through creative destruction".

Economics is the last prize awarded each year after medicine, physics, chemistry, literature and peace . The Nobel Prize for this field was not part of the original prize structure in the will of Swedish scientist Alfred Nobel. This prize was added in 1968, on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the founding of the Swedish Central Bank - Sveriges Riksbank, which is also the unit that contributes funds for this prize.

The process of nominating, selecting and awarding the Nobel Prize in Economics is similar to that of other fields. The names of the nominees and related information are kept secret for 50 years. This year's laureate is awarded a medal, a diploma and 11 million Swedish kronor (nearly $1.2 million).

The Nobel Prize in Economics has been awarded 57 times to date. The youngest winner was 46 and the oldest was 90. American scientists currently dominate the award.

Last year, the prize went to three American economists: Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson and James A. Robinson. They were awarded for their research on how social institutions are formed and how these groups influence prosperity.
