In Vietnam, diseases such as cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease, cancer, and diabetes are the cause of nearly 80% of deaths.
Cancer
According to GLOBOCAN 2022 statistics, Vietnam recorded 180,480 new cases and more than 120,000 deaths from cancer. Vietnam ranked 20th in new cases in Asia and 101st globally.
In men, the most common cancers are liver cancer (19.7%), followed by lung cancer (17.7%) and stomach cancer (11%). In women, they are breast cancer (28.9%), lung cancer (8.7%), and colorectal cancer (8.7%).
Cardiovascular disease
Even when the Covid-19 pandemic occurred (in 2021), cardiovascular disease is still the leading cause of death in our country. According to statistics from the Ministry of Health , about 200,000 people die from cardiovascular disease each year, accounting for 33% of all deaths.
According to statistics from the Heart Institute, the rate of high blood pressure in adults is about 25%, equivalent to 1 in 4 adults. High blood pressure increases the risk of death from stroke by 4 times and increases the risk of death from cardiovascular disease by 3 times.
More worryingly, cardiovascular disease mortality is increasing in low-income countries.
Diabetes
In Vietnam, the rate of diabetes in adults is estimated at 7.1%, equivalent to nearly 5 million patients. According to forecasts, the number of cases in Vietnam as well as the world will continue to increase rapidly in the coming years.
The disease is a common cause of disability and premature death in most countries and is a leading cause of blindness, cardiovascular disease, kidney failure and leg ulcers leading to amputation.
More than 55% of diabetes cases have complications, of which 34% are cardiovascular complications; 39.5% are eye and nerve complications; 24% are kidney complications.
Chronic respiratory disease
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is the third leading cause of death in the world. In Vietnam, the number of people with moderate and severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is the highest in the Asia- Pacific region.
According to the Ministry of Health, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is responsible for more than 25,000 deaths each year in Vietnam. Preliminary data from a survey conducted by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the General Statistics Office shows that up to 3.1% of adults (aged 18-69) have been diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
