Processing and manufacturing play a "locomotive" role
Accordingly, in May 2025, the industrial production index (IIP) of Nam Dinh province increased by 34.51% over the same period last year and increased by 4.55% over April. In the first 5 months of the year, the IIP increased by 29.16% over the same period, reflecting the strong and sustainable recovery of the local industry.
Compared to the previous month, the mining industry increased by 90.68%; the processing and manufacturing industry increased by 4.43%; the production and distribution of electricity, gas, hot water, steam and air conditioning increased by 15.01%; and the supply of water, waste and wastewater treatment increased by 5.50%.
Of which, the processing and manufacturing industry - the main driving force of the province's entire industry - increased by 29.56%, contributing 28.86 percentage points to the overall increase. The electricity, gas, hot water, steam and air conditioning production and distribution industry increased by 7.08%, contributing 0.17 percentage points. The water supply, waste and wastewater management and treatment industry increased by 17.81%, contributing 0.26 percentage points; the mining industry alone decreased by 34.66%, decreasing by 0.13 percentage points.

Some secondary industries had a fairly high industrial production index in the first 5 months of the year compared to the same period last year: Motor vehicle production increased by 40.26%; metal production increased by 19.73%; paper and paper products production increased by 19.49%; food processing production increased by 17.12%; textiles increased by 16.58%; garment production increased by 9.61%; bed, wardrobe, table and chair production increased by 9.11%. In addition, some industries had a decrease in production index: Beverage production decreased by 38.98%; printing and copying of all kinds of records decreased by 8.76%; leather and related products production decreased by 2.85%; repair, maintenance and installation of machinery and equipment decreased by 1.68%.
The consumption index of the processing and manufacturing industry in May increased by 5.09% compared to the previous month. In the first 5 months, this index increased more than 3 times compared to the same period last year, thanks to the strong recovery in consumption of the textile industry (more than 9 times), garment production increased by 14.71%, and furniture production increased more than 2 times.
Public investment creates development momentum
According to the Nam Dinh Statistical Office, development investment capital from the state budget managed by the locality in May 2025 was estimated at VND 785 billion, a sharp increase of 40.5% over the same period last year. Of which, provincial capital accounted for a large proportion with VND 747 billion, up 43.8%; district capital VND 24 billion, up 11.1%; commune capital VND 14 billion, down 21.2%.
In the first 5 months, the total realized public investment capital reached VND3,222 billion, equal to 24.6% of the yearly plan and up 20.1% over the same period. Notably, the strongest increase still belonged to the provincial level (up 22.8%), while the commune level decreased by 31.0%.
Regarding foreign investment attraction, as of May 25, 2025, Nam Dinh has newly granted and adjusted capital increase for 15 FDI projects, with a total registered capital of 237.4 million USD. Of which, 9 projects were newly granted with a total capital of 124.2 million USD, showing that efforts to improve the investment environment and attract foreign capital continue to be effective.
