Besides the majestic natural landscape and ancient historical relics, Poland has many interesting things waiting for you to discover.
1. Poland is home to the world's largest castle
The Teutonic Castle in Malbork is the largest castle in the world by land area. It was built in the 13th century and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In addition to the Teutonic Castle, Poland is home to 15 UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
2. Poland has the oldest salt mines in the world
When visiting Poland, don’t forget to visit the 800-year-old Wieliczka Salt Mine, one of the oldest salt mines in the world. It is famous as Poland’s underground salt mine and you will see rooms, sculptures, salt chandeliers and an entire chapel carved from rock salt.
This UNESCO World Heritage Site produced salt continuously from the 13th century until 2007, and you'll be amazed by the history and unique carvings of this salt mine.
3. Vodka originated in Poland
Many believe that vodka originated in Poland. Vodka was originally used as a medicine and Poland has been producing this popular drink since the Middle Ages. To this day, the Poles still produce some of the best vodka in the world, producing around 260 million liters each year.
4. The heaviest animal in Europe lives in Poland
The endangered European bison is Europe's heaviest land animal, weighing an average of over 600kg. They can be found roaming the Białowieża Primeval Forest in Poland – the last primeval forest in Europe.
5. Poland has the world's first upside-down house
Poland is home to the world’s first upside-down house. The upside-down wooden house was originally built in a forest, and it looks like something out of a fairy tale. Visitors must enter through an attic window and tour the fully furnished house, reminiscent of Polish homes of the 1970s. Hundreds of curious tourists have visited since it opened in 2007, and you can also find it in the tiny Polish village of Szymbark – home to just 500 people.
6. Poland has the oldest restaurant in Europe
Head to the city of Wrocław in Poland, and you will find “Piwnica Swidnicka”, the oldest restaurant in Europe. It has been open since 1275 and you can still enjoy a delicious meal there when visiting the country.
