Manchester United finished the Premier League season in the top three, but according to Gary Neville, that's not enough to guarantee the team's competitiveness next season. The Red Devils legend believes MU needs to sign up to six new players in the 2026 summer transfer window.
Speaking on his personal podcast, Neville affirmed that Manchester United's biggest priority is their defense and midfield. The former Red Devils captain wants the team to bring in three new defenders: a top-class center-back, a left-back, and a versatile player who can play in multiple positions in the defense.
"Manchester United definitely need more options on the flanks. In an ideal world , they should buy three defenders," Neville said.
Not stopping there, he also requested the team to add two quality central midfielders to cope with the demanding schedule when MU returned to the Champions League under Michael Carrick.
Neville particularly emphasized the need for midfielders capable of playing forward rather than just passing sideways or backward.
"I see too many 'crabs' (referring to players who tend to pass sideways) in midfield. Manchester United need players who dare to make through passes and are always thinking about attacking," the former English star commented.
The name that impressed Neville the most was Elliot Anderson of Nottingham Forest. The 23-year-old midfielder had just provided two assists against Manchester United in their 2-3 defeat at Old Trafford on May 17th.
According to Neville, Anderson possesses excellent passing ability, is a good free-kick taker, and is a perfect fit for the style of play Carrick is building. However, MU may have to compete directly with Manchester City in this transfer.
Besides strengthening the defense and midfield, Neville also wants MU to recruit a versatile attacking player who can play both on the wing and in the number 10 position, to share the workload with Bruno Fernandes in the long season ahead.
