77 malicious apps removed by Google, users need to uninstall immediately

More than 19 million downloads of 77 Android apps containing malicious code have been removed by Google, but experts warn users to check and uninstall immediately if they accidentally install them.

Zscaler's Threat Labs team has just discovered 77 malicious Android apps on Google Play with a total of more than 19 million downloads.

These apps contain various types of malware, the most dangerous of which is the Anatsa banking trojan, also known as Tea Bot.

Joker - a type of malware that accounts for nearly 25% of applications, is capable of stealing messages, contacts, making calls and automatically signing up for paid services.

Some apps disguise themselves as games or photo editing tools, but are actually silently stealing login data and sensitive information.

The Anatsa trojan alone targeted more than 831 banking and e-wallet applications globally.

The hacker's new trick is to disguise itself as the Document Reader - File Manager app, then install malware after the user has installed it.

Google quickly removed all of these malicious apps from the Play Store to reduce the risk to users.

Experts recommend turning on Play Protect, uninstalling suspicious apps, changing passwords, and only downloading apps from reputable developers.
