Van Tien Poetry Recitation Art becomes national intangible cultural heritage

On the evening of August 31, at Ben Tre ward, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vinh Long province held a ceremony to announce the inclusion of "Van Tien folk poetry performance art in Ben Tre province" in the list of national intangible cultural heritage and received a certificate from the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The genre of Van Tien Poetry is associated with the name and content of the famous Nom poem by poet Nguyen Dinh Chieu, Luc Van Tien. This work was composed by the poet around the early 1850s.

Van Tien poetry is a folk cultural product created by Southern people, originating from the poetic style of the central region, but with many improvements in tone and expression to suit the language, personality, soul and performance space of the South.

Van Tien's poetic style was born on the basis of the need to popularize patriotic poetry and literature, expressing the spirit of fighting without submitting to tyranny, using intelligence and talent to serve the country and the need to spread morality and honor the virtues of the Vietnamese people.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chairwoman of Vinh Long Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Thi Quyen Thanh said: Currently, Vinh Long province has 19 national intangible cultural heritages, of which "Van Tien Folk Poetry Performing Art of Ben Tre Province" was included in the List of National Intangible Cultural Heritages by the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism in June 2025.

This is the common joy of all the people of the province because a cultural heritage of the homeland that our ancestors created, built, preserved, passed on is preserved, promoted and shines.

In order to effectively preserve and promote the value of this intangible cultural heritage in the coming time, the Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Vinh Long province requested the local government to strengthen information and propaganda work in many forms and with rich content to raise awareness of all levels, sectors and people about the meaning and importance of the value of cultural heritage in general, and "Van Tien Folk Poetry Performing Art of Ben Tre Province" in particular.

The Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vinh Long province is researching and developing a project to preserve and promote the value of "Van Tien Folk Poetry Performing Art of Ben Tre Province" in conjunction with the province's cultural activities. Building unique cultural tourism products, helping visitors explore and experience, while at the same time, spreading the heritage values ​​and unique cultural features of the locality to people inside and outside the province.

In addition, research and organize training courses to transmit Van Tien folk poetry performance to the younger generation. Collect and systematize related documents and artifacts; select and propose to award honorary titles to artisans who have made many contributions in the process of practicing and transmitting the heritage.

At the same time, coordinate with the Department of Education and Training to organize the teaching and transmission of Van Tien Poetry Recitation art to students, incorporate it into extracurricular activities with new content to develop language thinking, moral education and personality for the young generation.
