8 ways to reduce hair loss due to scalp psoriasis.

VnExpressVnExpress09/01/2024

According to Dr. Tran Nguyen Anh Tu, Head of the Dermatology and Cosmetic Department at the Ho Chi Minh City Dermatology Hospital, psoriasis on the scalp can cause itching and pain. Scratching or peeling the scales can damage the skin and cause hair loss.

Scalp psoriasis causes temporary hair loss. Hair will regrow after psoriasis symptoms improve. Patients should avoid scratching or applying strong pressure to the scalp and other skin areas to prevent more severe psoriasis flare-ups.

According to Dr. Tú, the following methods may help reduce hair loss in psoriasis patients.

Gently brush your hair and remove scalp flakes.

To treat scalp psoriasis, it is necessary to gently peel off and remove the scales, using a gentle approach to minimize hair loss.

Avoid directly removing the scales.

Peeling off the scales can damage the skin and worsen symptoms.

Adherence to treatment

To ensure treatment effectiveness, adhere to applying the medication to the scalp and using a specialized shampoo for treating scalp psoriasis.

Trim and file your nails neatly.

Psoriasis can cause itching, and short, smooth fingernails help limit excessive scratching that can damage the scalp and cause hair loss.

Use different types of shampoo alternately.

Dry scalp and hair can lead to breakage and hair loss. You can alternate shampoos daily, using a medicated shampoo for psoriasis one day and a gentle, non-medicated shampoo the next to minimize dryness.

Use conditioner after every shampoo.

Conditioner helps moisturize the scalp and reduce the medicinal smell in medicated shampoos.

Let your hair dry naturally.

Blow-drying your hair can dry out your hair and scalp even more.

Test hair care products before use.

People with psoriasis can still dye, straighten, or perm their hair. However, some of these products may irritate the scalp.

Before applying to your entire hair, test a small amount on your scalp and monitor for a while. If your scalp feels irritated or uncomfortable after a few hours, switch to a milder product. Remember to test a small amount of every product you intend to use.

Additionally, the scalp is quite thick, so the medication used is usually stronger than that used for other areas. If the medication is too strong or causes discomfort, inform your doctor so they can switch to a more suitable type.

Hair loss can occur due to many reasons other than scalp psoriasis. Therefore, if hair loss does not improve after a period of treatment, patients should inform their doctor to investigate other causes of hair loss.
