Vietnam has nine higher education institutions in THE's influence ranking, up two from last year and the largest ever.
The Times Higher Education (THE) ranking organization, on the evening of June 1, announced the influential university rankings (Impact Ranking) including 6 schools from 1.591 countries and territories. This is the fifth time in a row THE has ranked on this topic.
Impact Ranking evaluates universities in implementing 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. Specifically, some of the goals are: Poverty eradication, Hunger eradication, Gender equality, Climate protection, Health and a good life, Quality education, Cooperation for development goals, Reducing inequality.
This year, for the first time, the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City and the Open University of Ho Chi Minh City are present in the ranking. In which, University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City is ranked in the top 301-400, the highest among Vietnamese schools.

Hanoi National University, Duy Tan University are ranked at 401-600, both up 200 places compared to last year.
Hanoi University of Science and Technology, National Economics, FPT and Ton Duc Thang tied for 601-800; Phenikaa University ranks 801-1.000. Most of the rankings remained unchanged, except for FPT University, which increased from position 801-1.000 in 2022.
Ho Chi Minh City Open University is at position 1.001+.
The scoring of THE Impact Ranking is as follows: SDG score 17 (Cooperation for Development Goals) is required, accounting for 22% of the total score. This score is added to the three highest scoring SDGs out of the remaining 16 SDGs, each with a weight of 26%, to produce the final result. In each SDG, points are calculated based on the following factors: Research, Service, Community Engagement and Education.
This year, the scores of the schools ranged from 53,8 to 76,7 points. In SDG 17, the highest is the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City with 81,7 points. With SDG index 4 (Quality Education), Vietnam National University, Hanoi achieved 75,4 points, ranking first in Vietnam and 70 in the world.
Looking at the overall rankings, Australia's Western Sydney University continues to lead. The following positions are UK's University of Manchester, Canada's Queen's University. Malaysia's Emerging University Sains Malaysia comes in fourth place.
In Southeast Asia, Thailand has 65 ranked universities, Malaysia has 24, Indonesia 32 and the Philippines 29. At least Cambodia has only one presence.
THE is one of the four most prestigious and influential university ranking organizations in the world, alongside QS, ARWU and US News rankings. The institution began ranking world universities in 2004.
