NDO - Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said yesterday that the country welcomed a record number of tourists of 15.7 million by 2024.

Speaking at a weekly press conference in the new administrative capital east of Cairo, Mostafa Madbouly called the figure "promising" and said that "if it weren't for the events taking place in the region, the number of tourists would have reached 18 million".

Mr. Madbouly expressed hope that Egypt will achieve its target of welcoming 18 million tourists by 2025, "especially with the official opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum scheduled to take place this year."

According to official figures, the number of tourists to Egypt dropped significantly from more than 13 million in 2019 to about 3.7 million in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, then gradually recovered to about 8 million in 2021, 11.7 million in 2022 and 14.9 million in 2023.

Tourism is one of Egypt's main sources of foreign exchange, along with revenues from the Suez Canal, exports, and remittances from Egyptians living abroad.
