Mr. H. was admitted to the hospital with a severely swollen left knee, severe pain, and inability to move. He needed someone to support him when walking. Previously, while playing volleyball, Mr. H. fell and suffered a serious injury.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) results showed that the patient had a complete rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament and the medial collateral ligament of the left knee, grade II damage to the medial patellofemoral ligament, joint effusion, torn knee capsule, and soft tissue edema around the knee, causing the joint to be loose and unstable. This is a complex injury. If not treated promptly, it can lead to early osteoarthritis, severely affecting the patient's quality of life.

Specialist Doctor I Hoang Duc Manh (Orthopedic Trauma Department) and his team performed arthroscopic surgery to simultaneously reconstruct both ligaments for the patient in the same surgery. Notably, although the patient's medial collateral ligament was completely torn, the doctors were still able to preserve the old ligament, suturing the attachment point with absorbable anchor screws instead of having to take another tendon to reconstruct a new ligament for the patient. At the same time, the doctors also successfully reconstructed the anterior cruciate ligament using arthroscopic techniques.

Three days after surgery, the patient was able to gently move the left knee joint, stand and continue physical therapy.

Dr. Manh said: Ligaments play an important role in keeping the knee joint stable. If the ligament is torn and not promptly reconstructed, the joint will become increasingly loose, weak and lead to severe degeneration.
