The AI developed by the founder of Facebook is having the opposite effect.

Meta AI is more than just a feature; it's part of the company's global artificial intelligence development strategy. However, this has sparked strong reactions from users.

Although it has been available in Vietnamese since late 2024, many users have recently noticed the frequent appearance of Meta's AI technology. From Facebook posts to Instagram and Messenger, purple circles constantly appear, asking users if they need help or clarification of any information.

In fact, this is a strategic move in the fierce AI race among tech giants. While OpenAI holds the upper hand with ChatGPT, Google is developing Gemini, and Meta is actively promoting AI across its ecosystem to leverage its massive platform with billions of users in order to catch up with competitors.

However, this move by Meta has also raised questions about data security. Some have expressed concern about the technology becoming so deeply integrated into people's daily lives.

What is Meta AI?

This is a virtual assistant model developed by Meta, Facebook's parent company, based on the Llama 3 large language model (LLM), and most recently Llama 4. Meta considers Llama 4 a significant step forward in the field of artificial intelligence, and is about to launch Llama 4 Behemoth - the world's smartest LLM.

Currently, Meta AI is integrated into Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. You can use the AI by creating a new conversation or mentioning @MetaAI in ongoing conversations. Vietnamese language support has been available since October 2024.

In addition to features like answering questions, suggesting content, and using "Imagine" to create images, Meta AI can help users save time or support creative work such as creating posts, editing photos, and searching for information directly. You can visit Meta AI's fan page to learn more about the tool's applications.

Users can search for Reels related to the conversation topic directly within the message box. Just as ChatGPT is taking social media by storm with its ability to create characters from toy boxes, users can also create and personalize AI characters to their liking on Meta AI.

From the beginning of 2025, Meta AI will be customized for Vietnamese users, capable of understanding local culture and displaying more frequently. On the Meta ecosystem, after browsing a few posts or entering a chat, the purple circle of the tool will appear.

By proactively integrating AI extensively, Meta not only wants you to use it more but also to create an ecosystem where AI supports everything from search and shopping to social interaction, thereby increasing the value of these platforms.

User feedback

While offering entertainment value and convenience to users in applications, Meta AI is receiving much criticism regarding data security issues and its excessive frequency, which many find overwhelming.

Imagine you're chatting with a friend, for example, about a movie you watched yesterday or something sensitive you need advice on. While it would be convenient to use AI to explain the movie's plot or clarify the issue you want to convey, it would diminish the value of the conversation.

Polly Hudson, a reporter from The Guardian , felt obsessed with the blue-purple circles and suggested that the reason for the online outrage was that people couldn't turn the feature off.

"We should be allowed to turn this feature off, instead of being forced to accept it. It's a threatening presence in the corner of the screen, always there, watching and waiting," she wrote.

Previously, many news outlets such as Wired and AP News had reported on Meta's use of user data to train its AI. Meta had also been banned from releasing its AI in the European market due to privacy violations. The parent company of numerous apps such as Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger has also acknowledged this.

Currently, Meta has committed to using only publicly available and licensed information, and not using data from private messages or from users under 18 years old. The company has also open-sourced Llama 4 to increase transparency by allowing the community to participate in customizing and developing the model.

However, the Open Source Initiative stated in 2023 that Llama 4 is no longer classified as open source. Meta has yet to fully disclose how they collect and use user data to train the AI.

In the future, the applications of AI will become increasingly widespread. Users can take advantage of its benefits, but they also need to verify information and protect their personal data appropriately.
