AirPods competitors like Google's Pixel Buds have been offering translation capabilities for years, and Apple has been offering its own translation app for the iPhone since 2020. Still, the news has excited the AirPods community.

Bloomberg explains how it works: when an English speaker hears someone speaking in Spanish, the iPhone translates directly into English and then sends it to the AirPods, and vice versa.

The AirPods update is part of Apple’s software overhaul this year. The iPhone maker is preparing the biggest “makeover” in iOS history, along with a macOS redesign to welcome a new generation of users. Apple is also upgrading translation technology in iOS 19.

The company often adds new features to AirPods through software updates, meaning users don’t have to buy new headphones. For example, in 2024, it introduced a hearing-related option for the second-generation AirPods Pro, which included a hearing test without having to see a doctor.

Apple is still working on new AirPods hardware, including the third-generation AirPods Pro. There's also a model with a built-in camera that uses AI to analyze the environment around it.

Last year, Apple introduced new colors for the AirPods Max and AirPods 4.
