AirTag 2 addresses tracking concerns
According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, AirTag 2 (codename B589) is in the production testing phase and is expected to launch about 4 years after the first AirTag was launched.
In addition to a more powerful wireless chip, wider operating range, and improved location tracking capabilities, AirTag 2 will be equipped with enhanced security features to prevent the device from being exploited for tracking purposes. Specifically, the speaker on AirTag 2 will be designed to be more difficult to remove, thereby limiting the ability of bad guys to disable audio alerts when attaching the device to someone else.
However, Mr. Gurman did not mention any design changes. This means that AirTag 2 may not have a keyhole as many users expected.
The issue of AirTags being exploited for tracking has been controversial in recent times. Apple has tried to address it with software updates, but it has not been able to completely solve it. With AirTag 2, Apple hopes to bring a more comprehensive solution that both ensures anti-lost features and prevents privacy invasions.
