The Godfather was released in 1972 and was a huge commercial success, grossing $286 million and receiving critical acclaim, but Al Pacino was not paid much for the film, with rumors that he only received a salary of $35,000.

"When I finished filming The Godfather , I was broke. My manager got my share of the money while I had to live on the support of actress Jill Clayburgh," he wrote in his memoir Sonny Boy .
Al Pacino did not work much, making only five films during the 1980s.
Made for $54 million, The Godfather : Part III opened in 1990 and grossed $136.9 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. Pacino was paid $8 million for the film, plus $50,000 a day for nearly a week of extra shooting.
However, beyond the money issue, Al Pacino also wrote in his book that he "would find it an interesting challenge to revisit Michael Corleone nearly 20 years after the events of the previous film and almost as long since I last played the role in real life."

"I had about $90,000 in the bank and that was it," the 84-year-old actor wrote in his memoir.
“You could say I was taken advantage of,” he continued. “I could blame my accountants, I could blame my manager Mary Bregman. I could blame myself, but then I have to take responsibility for my own actions.”
"I didn't understand how money worked," he admitted. Actress Diane Keaton encouraged Pacino to return to acting, and his first project was Sea of Love , a critically acclaimed and hugely successful 1989 horror film starring Ellen Barkin. It was also Pacino's first film since Revolution in 1985.
Pacino admitted that he didn't make much money from the film because "they knew I had been out of work for four years, so they didn't have to offer me a lucrative salary deal."

In 2001, Al Pacino moved to Los Angeles to be closer to his twins Anton and Olivia, now 23. The twins were born while he was living with his ex-wife Beverly D'Angelo. He also has two other children: Julie (34) with acting coach Jan Tarrant and Roman (born June 2023) with Noor Alfallah, 53 years his junior.
Pacino's lifestyle cost him a fortune. "My staff grew," he wrote. "I had two houses, an apartment, an office, and my children's families to support. I was spending $300,000 to $400,000 a month, which was a lot of money."
By 2011, Pacino began to suspect his accountants. The actor had splurged on a family trip to Europe, which included flights on a Gulfstream 550 private jet, an entire floor of the Dorchester Hotel in England, and a trip to Legoland in Denmark.
Back home in Los Angeles, Pacino found himself with more money than before, which made him feel strange. "I knew something was wrong," he admitted, before discovering his accountant had lied, being convicted and sent to prison.
"I had $50 million and then nothing," he wrote in his memoir.
The Godfather listed some of his expenses: paying for 16 cars, 23 cell phones and hiring a gardener who earns $400,000 a year. "You should know, that's gardening rent for a house that I don't even live in," he revealed.
Pacino wrote that he did not know much about where the money was spent.
"I didn't even sign my own checks, the accountant signed them and I just let them go. I didn't look at them and he didn't tell me how much I had or where they went, and I didn't keep track of who got what. I was such a stupid actor," he confessed.
In 2001, Al Pacino welcomed twins Anton and Olivia while living with his ex-wife Beverly D'Angelo.
When he was in his 70s, Al Pacino admitted, "The days of the big paychecks I used to enjoy are gone." So he started budgeting and working more.
He sold one of the houses, did commercials for Australian television and started meeting people through seminars.
Pacino confessed that some of his later projects were done purely for money and "weren't very good".
" Jack and Jill was the first movie I did after losing all my money. Honestly, I did it because I had nothing left. Adam Sandler wanted me to do it and they paid me a lot of money… I love Adam, he was great to work with and we became great friends. I also made some really bad movies, I don't want to talk about them," he revealed.
Now 84, Oscar-winning actor Al Pacino admits he "has to think very seriously about my wealth now. That means I have to seek advice from people who are much smarter than me."
