In recent days, the massive influx of water from upstream, combined with high tides and local rainfall, has submerged many areas of the Dong Thap Muoi region in Tay Ninh province. Houses and belongings are inundated, and roads have turned into rivers. Dike breaches in some areas have submerged rice paddies, crops, and fruit trees. Amidst these hardships and losses, the spirit of solidarity and mutual support shines brighter than ever.
Unlike previous years, this year the floods came quickly and strongly, causing many sections of dikes to leak or even break. Facing rising water levels, vulnerable dikes have become a line of defense protecting crops. These days, people in the Dong Thap Muoi region of the province, especially those in heavily affected areas, are working together in the fields, day and night. They are using everything they can, from sandbags and bamboo stakes to planks, to quickly reinforce and repair broken sections of dikes. The image of dozens of people wading through the rain, hastily passing bags of sand to each other to hold the dikes together, is deeply moving.
When roads are deeply flooded, the small, three-plank boat becomes the primary means of transportation, and also a "bridge" of human kindness. Those who own boats readily use them to help neighbors move their belongings, take children to school, or transport essential supplies to isolated households. Household items are placed on elevated platforms, but compassion and solidarity are paramount. Hasty meals, shared packets of instant noodles, and sincere words of encouragement and support are invaluable sources of emotional support.
The spirit of solidarity spread even further when the army and militia were mobilized, working alongside the people to overcome the disaster. They did not hesitate to wade through the water to help people reinforce their houses and move their belongings and household items.
The flood season will eventually pass, but the losses are unavoidable. Hundreds of hectares of fruit trees and rice paddies have been submerged, leaving many families at risk of losing everything. However, thanks to the concerted efforts and timely support from the government, and especially the strength of solidarity, the people of Dong Thap Muoi have gained renewed faith and motivation to start again.
