The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), with its 11 member states, is on track to become the world's fourth-largest economy , with a digital economy worth $560 billion by 2030. Amazon is partnering with the region to enhance digital capabilities, expand cloud infrastructure, and leverage AI—platforms that businesses and organizations are already leveraging to drive growth and innovation.

David Zapolsky, Amazon's Global Head of Legal and External Affairs, stated: “Amazon anticipates investing over $33 billion in Southeast Asia by 2039. We are building infrastructure, training the local workforce, and supporting businesses in the region to enhance their competitiveness in the global market. Southeast Asian governments have demonstrated strong leadership in building stable policies and economic environments, thereby driving growth and attracting global investment in AI and technology at an unprecedented pace.”

In 2025 alone, Amazon's total investment in Southeast Asia exceeded $3 billion.

Amazon began its journey in Southeast Asia 16 years ago, launching AWS Region Singapore in 2010 – one of the earliest infrastructure investments in Asia by a global technology company – followed by the opening of its e-commerce platform Amazon.sg in 2019.

From that milestone, Amazon's presence in the region has deepened through a series of activities such as creating jobs, supporting digital transformation, and enhancing cloud computing and AI skills for the workforce. AWS Region was successively deployed in Singapore (2010), Indonesia (2021), Malaysia (2024), and Thailand (2025). Currently, Amazon has over 3,000 employees and 2,500 expansion personnel at facilities in the region. By 2025 alone, Amazon's total investment in Southeast Asia will exceed $3 billion – including infrastructure and personnel costs – across business segments such as online retail (Store), AWS services, devices, and entertainment.

These platforms are making a tangible impact in practice. Many businesses, startups, and government agencies in the region have adopted AI on AWS to enhance productivity and drive digital transformation. In Malaysia, 123RF uses Amazon's AI technology to analyze the content of millions of images, doubling search accuracy and reducing retrieval time by 90%. UnionBank in the Philippines deployed generative AI-based analytics (GenAI) for over 200 sales personnel, reducing the time it takes to find answers to one-third to one-fifth of what it used to be...

Recognizing the crucial importance of a skilled AI workforce in building national AI capabilities, Amazon has partnered with governments and organizations to implement numerous skills training programs in the region. Since 2017, Amazon has trained 2.7 million people in Southeast Asia in cloud computing skills, laying the foundation for AI applications in businesses.

Amazon is collaborating with governments, educational institutions, and industry partners to promote the application of AI and build a digital workforce for highly specialized positions such as cloud architects, AI/ML specialists, and data engineers in Southeast Asia.

Amazon also partners with entrepreneurs and content creators in Southeast Asia to connect them with hundreds of millions of customers globally.

Thanks to the Amazon Global Selling program, thousands of businesses across Southeast Asia – mostly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) – have been able to bring their products to customers in more than 200 countries and territories. Each year, businesses in the region supply millions of products to the international market, from Singaporean brands in healthcare and personal care, baby products, household goods, and beauty, to Vietnamese manufacturers in furniture, home decor, kitchenware, and apparel.

As Southeast Asia continues to assert itself as one of the world's most dynamic digital economies, Amazon says it will continue investing in infrastructure, skills training, business support, content development, and partnerships with governments in the region to ensure that the opportunities offered by AI are widespread and sustainable.
