On April 19th, Indian voters officially began participating in the general election in 21 states and territories to elect the 18th Lok Sabha (Lower House of Parliament). The election process consists of seven phases, each lasting one day and concluding on June 1st.
A political party or coalition needs at least 272 seats to secure a majority in power. This year's general election takes place against the backdrop of India's recent spectacular transformations in all aspects, from science and technology, military , and economy to foreign policy.
Observers believe that in this general election, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of incumbent Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is almost certain to prevail over the India Comprehensive Development Alliance (INDIA), led by the Congress Party. It is highly likely that Prime Minister Modi will be re-elected for a third consecutive term and will be the second person, after Jawaharlal Nehru, to secure a third term as Prime Minister.
