Tensions between Russia and France are escalating.

Russian media quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as stating that Russia opposes France's seizure of its oil tanker, considering it an illegal act.

Speaking to RIA Novosti, the Russian Embassy in Paris said that Paris had not informed Moscow of its actions. According to initial information, the captain of the oil tanker is a Russian citizen.

Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that the French Navy, with the support of Britain and partners, had seized the oil tanker Tagor while it was sailing in the Atlantic Ocean. According to the online maritime tracking platform VesselFinder, the Tagor, flying the flag of Madagascar, docked at the Russian port of Murmansk in early May.

The French Navy also seized the oil tanker Deyna in the Western Mediterranean in March. The Deyna, flying the Mozambique flag, also departed from Murmansk. However, French authorities lifted the detention order after the ship paid its fine in April. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stressed that Moscow will use all available means to ensure respect for the principle of freedom of navigation.
