The relics were discovered in the late 19th century in Siddharthnagar district, Uttar Pradesh state, near the Nepal border and the ancient city of Kapilavastu, the childhood home of the Buddha.

Indian Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat stressed that this sacred archaeological treasure not only has profound historical value, but is also a spiritual symbol associated with Indian cultural identity. He affirmed that this is a sacred moment marking the revival of national memory and pride.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also welcomed the return of the sacred Piprahwa relic of Lord Buddha to India, underlining India's deep respect for the teachings of Lord Buddha and its commitment to preserving its spiritual and historical heritage.

Also returning to India this time is a collection of more than 300 precious gems dating back to the Maurya Empire, around 240-200 BC.

This collection is among more than 2,000 gems that were once buried in a stupa at the Piprahwa site along with the aforementioned Buddha relics./.
