According to PTI news agency and local officials, the fire broke out in a building with a restaurant on the ground floor and apartments on the upper floors. Images from the scene showed thick smoke engulfing the building as firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze. Many local residents also assisted in the rescue efforts, helping to evacuate those trapped and bring the injured to safety.
Among the fatalities were more than 15 foreigners. Over 40 people were rescued from the fire. The cause of the incident is under investigation.
On social media platform X, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered condolences to the families of the victims and stated that the government would provide 200,000 rupees (over $2,000) to the family of each deceased victim in the fire and 50,000 rupees (over $520) to each injured person.
Fires occur fairly frequently in India. Many serious incidents in recent years are believed to be related to a failure to fully comply with building regulations and fire safety standards.
