According to a VNA reporter in New Delhi, on the afternoon of March 16, Chairman of the Election Commission of India, Mr. Rajiv Kumar, announced the progress of the country's general election, and affirmed that everything was ready for the biggest festival of Indian democracy.
Speaking at a press conference, Mr. Kumar said the Lok Sabha election will begin on April 19 and will take place in seven phases until June 1. The counting of votes in all 543 constituencies will be conducted in one day on June 4, ahead of the June 16 deadline for forming a new government .

According to Mr. Kumar, India has 968 million registered voters, 1.05 million polling stations manned by 15 million staff along with 5.5 million electronic voting machines. The Election Commission is ready to facilitate home voting for voters above 85 years of age and people with disabilities across the country.
Kumar also affirmed his efforts to combat violence during the election. Accordingly, the government will conduct security checks on all flights and deploy drones to monitor border areas. Kumar emphasized his commitment to creating a truly democratic and festive environment.
The term of the 17th Lok Sabha (Lower House) will expire on June 16, 2024.
