The Indian leader also urged people to pay more attention to elderly family members, regularly checking on their health and limiting their time outdoors during peak hours of hot weather. He also encouraged people to place water outside their homes and shops to help birds and animals in the harsh weather conditions.
The above warning was issued by Prime Minister Modi amidst the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a severe heatwave warning for several states in central and northwestern India, with the Delhi Capital Region (NCR) forecast to continue experiencing intense heat for at least the next two days with maximum temperatures around 45 degrees Celsius.
According to the IMD, extreme heat is now affecting many areas of Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Bihar, Odisha, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh. Heatstroke has claimed at least 16 lives in Telangana.
The current heatwave continues to heighten concerns about the risk of water shortages, power overload, and public health impacts in many major Indian cities, as the South Asian nation enters the peak of summer.
