According to sources, this program aims to equip the Sukhoi 30MKI fighter jets – the backbone of the Indian Air Force (IAF) – with better survivability in modern electronic warfare environments.
According to reports, the Indian Ministry of Defence has requested that these fighter jets be equipped with the most advanced anti-jamming and anti-tampering Global Positioning System (GPS) antenna systems.
Signal jamming and spoofing are key elements of electronic warfare, aimed at disrupting radio and GPS signals, which allow pilots to navigate and fire ammunition accurately.
Jamming disrupts the signal, while signal spoofing sends incorrect signals to the enemy's navigation system.
Currently, the IAF operates approximately 258 Su-30MKI fighter jets. The proposed upgrade is part of the IAF's Super Sukhoi aircraft modernization program.
The Sukhoi 30MKI is an Indian-specific variant of the Russian Su-30 aircraft, which entered service with the IAF in 2002.
The Indian Ministry of Defence aims to purchase 300 antenna systems.
This move comes as India plans to acquire fifth-generation stealth fighter jets.
In February 2026, The New Indian Express reported that Russia's Sukhoi Su-57 had emerged as a leading candidate.
A high-level delegation from Russia visited a facility of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, which manufactures Sukhoi aircraft under license from Russia.
In January 2026, Vadim Badekha, CEO of the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), stated that negotiations between Russia and India regarding the production of Sukhoi Su-57 aircraft in India were in an advanced stage.
At the Dubai Airshow in November 2025, Russia announced its offer to license the full production of the Su-57 aircraft in India.
India has launched the "Make in India" program to boost domestic manufacturing capabilities.
Nearly 60% of the Indian Armed Forces' defense equipment originates from the Soviet Union/Russia, while the Sukhoi SU-30MKI currently accounts for 45% of the IAF's fighter fleet.
