Initial investigation results determined: After many days of closing to visit his family, on the afternoon of January 31, 2025, Mr. Nguyen Hoang Thanh Duoc (born in 1985) returned to the store on Lam Quang Ky Street, Vinh Lac Ward, Rach Gia City, Kien Giang Province (now Rach Gia Ward, An Giang Province) and discovered that the store had signs of being broken into.

Upon inspection, he discovered that 17kg of various types of dried squid (worth over 15 million VND) were missing, so he reported it to the police. Through investigation, the police quickly identified and invited Nguyen Quoc Thinh to the headquarters for questioning.

However, Thinh fled the locality.
