Tight security at the second phase of the Van Thinh Phat trial.

(Dan Tri Newspaper) - On the morning of September 19th, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Court opened the trial of Ms. Truong My Lan (former Chairwoman of Van Thinh Phat Group) and 33 co-defendants. Security in the court area was tightened.

At approximately 5:30 AM on September 19th, police forces arrived at the Ho Chi Minh City People's Court to prepare security for the trial of defendant Truong My Lan and 33 accomplices on charges of fraud, money laundering, and illegal cross-border currency trafficking. At 5:45 AM, a convoy of about 15 vehicles escorted Ms. Truong My Lan and the other defendants to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Court.
The vehicles carrying the defendants traveled along Nam Ky Khoi Nghia Street. Numerous security personnel were present in front of the courthouse. The vehicles carrying the defendants were escorted into the courthouse grounds by three traffic police motorcycles. Inside the courthouse grounds, approximately 1,000 seats and numerous LED screens were prepared for victims and related parties to attend the trial of the Van Thinh Phat case, phase 2. Around the streets near the courthouse, such as Nam Ky Khoi Nghia, Nguyen Du, Ly Tu Trong, Nguyen Trung Truc, etc., law enforcement officers are stationed to ensure order.
Last April, Ms. Truong My Lan (former Chairwoman of Van Thinh Phat Group) was sentenced to death by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Court for the crimes of embezzlement, violating banking regulations, and bribery. She appealed the sentence, and her appeal will be considered this coming October. Two signs were erected in front of the building, stating "Filming and photography prohibited" and "Gathering prohibited." Security is tight around the Ho Chi Minh City People's Court. Some residents prepared food before the trial began. The trial is expected to last until October 19th.
