That's Lu Ky Chicken Noodle Soup restaurant, owned by the family of Quang Quoc Huy (46 years old), located in a peaceful alley on Nguyen Trai Street. For over 30 years, after inheriting the restaurant from relatives, Huy has built it into a famous eatery in the Cholon area.
The tables were full of customers.
One cool weekday afternoon, I went to Huy's restaurant, not too far from my house. The restaurant opens at 3 PM, and I arrived around 4 PM to be surprised to see it packed with customers, filling every table in the cozy space.
Even though it was only the middle of the week, the restaurant was crowded with customers.
Seeing my surprise, the owner smiled and said that it wasn't peak hour yet, and that it would be even busier in the evening. That's also why, not long ago, the restaurant opened a new, more spacious location a few meters away to provide more comfortable seating for customers.
Mr. Huy, along with his wife, relatives, and staff, were busy, each doing their part, continuously preparing portions of vermicelli and noodles so that customers wouldn't have to wait long. And so, one customer after another kept coming and going.
Sharing his story with us, the owner said he started this restaurant over 30 years ago, in 1991. Before that, the restaurant was opened by a relative, an uncle, and it was also very popular. Later, his uncle's family moved to Australia to settle down, leaving the restaurant to him to start his own business.
Mr. Huy inherited the shop in 1991 and has been running it ever since.

From then on, he devoted his entire youth to the restaurant, and even after getting married and having two children, his family still made a living from this business. His wife, Ly Ngoc Phuong (47 years old), who lives next door, is also proud to hear this, as their family restaurant has allowed them to provide their children with a good education, making them a source of pride for their parents.
"Your restaurant is always packed with customers, you must have a special secret?" I asked. The owner calmly replied that most of them were regulars who had been eating here for decades and loved the taste. He attributed it to the rich, flavorful dishes that appealed to many people. "All the ingredients used are the freshest. Customers can feel that," he explained.
Here, they sell many different dishes, but the most famous and popular among customers is chicken vermicelli. Each serving at the restaurant is moderately priced, with the cheapest being 50,000 VND. Mr. Huy smiled and said there's no most expensive bowl, because the restaurant will accommodate customers as much as they want to eat.
I've been eating it since I was a little kid.
Among the customers at the restaurant were Mr. Nguyen Nhat (28 years old) and his wife. He said that his family lives in District 8, and whenever he craves chicken vermicelli or Chinese noodles, he comes to this restaurant because he has been eating there since he was a child.
Each meal here costs at least 50,000 VND.
The restaurant is located at 904/3 Nguyen Trai (District 5).
"Back when I was a student, my parents used to take me to this restaurant. What I eat isn't just the food, but also the memories. Whether I'm sad or happy, I always come to this alley and eat this dish because I find peace in this Chinese restaurant. In Saigon, my two favorite noodle shops are Ky Dong chicken noodle soup and Lu Ky chicken noodle soup," the customer confided.
Next to her, Ms. Hoa (Mr. Nhat's wife) also said that ever since they first met, he often took her here to eat. She doesn't like vermicelli, but she prefers the noodles here, with their chewy, soft noodles and light, sweet broth.
Accordingly, she often orders the noodles with chicken offal and chicken thighs because those are her favorite dishes. Served with a sweet ginger dipping sauce, she gives the dish a 9/10 rating. The restaurant also holds special memories for the couple, and they jokingly say that when they have children, their whole family will definitely come here to eat.
Huy said the secret to the restaurant's success lies in using fresh ingredients and cooking methods that suit customers' tastes.
Huy said the restaurant is open from 3 PM to 11 PM. Every day, he is happy to be involved with the restaurant, bringing his most heartfelt meals to satisfy the customers who have supported him for so many years…
"For me, whether the restaurant is in an alley or on a main street doesn't matter much. What's important is that if the food is delicious and customers enjoy it, then no matter where it is, they will find you," he added.
