Farmer changes his life thanks to an albino buffalo

Thailand's Ko Muang Phet buffalo has a 90% chance of giving birth to albino calves, helping Mr. Damrongsak's family have a house, a car and expand their farm.

At the 12th Uthai Thani Thai Buffalo Festival on March 12, the buffalo Ko Muang Phet of Morakot farm was transferred to Wanasuwan farm in Chiang Rai, with a record price of 18 million baht ((more than 12 billion VND).

This albino buffalo is nearly 5 years old, raised by Mr. Damrongsak, owner of Morakot farm in Phetchaburi province, southern Thailand. For many years, it has held the title of the largest buffalo breed in Thailand, with outstanding beauty and a height of 1.8 m, more than 3 m long, weighing 1.5 tons.

Ko Muang Phet has a 90% chance of giving birth to albino calves. More importantly, its body has feather swirls, which are considered a sign of a docile, non-violent buffalo that will bring luck and fortune to its owner.

Ko Muang Phet also made his mark in the Thai entertainment industry when he played Ai Khlaow’s buffalo in the latest version of the popular TV series Mon Rak Luk Thung. For many years, Ko Muang Phet has been the undefeated champion in white buffalo competitions. He is now no longer competing and focuses on breeding.

Mr. Damrongsak, 29 years old, shared that his passion for exploring the potential of Thailand's buffalo farming industry brought him to Ko Muang Phet. From raising ordinary buffaloes, after only a few years, he built his 9th farm.

Damrongsak bought the buffalo Ko Muang Phet in 2019 for 2 million baht (1.3 billion VND). Over the years, he has cared for it like a precious gem. Thanks to Ko Muang Phet, Damrongsak has earned a lot of money for his family, built a house, and bought a car.

"I have experienced many joys and sorrows with this buffalo, including the Covid-19 pandemic with many difficulties," he said.

A tycoon in Dubai once offered to buy the buffalo for a very high price, but Mr. Damrongsak refused to sell it, because he wanted it to be raised in Thailand. Now that he has transferred it, Damrongsak hopes that the new owner will continue to expand the legacy of Ko Muang Phet and contribute to the development of the albino buffalo breeding industry in his country.

The owner of Wanasuwan Farm in Chiang Rai said he did not expect the owner of Ko Muang Phet to decide to sell it so easily. "The investment in buying Ko Muang Phet was worth it," he said.

Wanasuwan Farm believes that in the next 5 years, the sale of Ko Muang Phet's semen for breeding will help earn about 50 million baht/year (50 billion VND). The farm said it will continue to care for and raise him so that he can give birth to many healthy children.

Albino buffalo are prized in many cultures for their rarity and the myths associated with them. In Thailand, they are often seen as symbols of good luck and, as the sale in Ko Muang Phet shows, can fetch very high prices. These animals are particularly valuable not only for their colour but also for their fertility.
