Thanks to growing ST25 rice in Quang Ngai commune (Da Huoai district, Lam Dong province) in an organic way, Mr. Vo Thanh Tung has received positive results when the rice has good yield, good quality, and high selling price.
On the 5th day of the Lunar New Year 2025, while people were still enjoying spring, Mr. Vo Thanh Tung found his joy in the ST25 rice field full of grains in Quang Ngai commune. Mr. Tung chose the 5th day of the Lunar New Year to bring the machine down to the field to harvest the rice because there were enough days, ensuring the best quality of rice when brought to market.
ST25 rice was grown by Mr. Tung in Quang Ngai commune and harvested on the 5th day of the Lunar New Year 2025.
More specifically, Mr. Vo Thanh Tung is currently a reporter for Ho Chi Minh City Law Newspaper residing in Lam Dong province. "Growing ST25 rice has helped me earn an additional monthly income equivalent to about 1 month's salary as a reporter," Mr. Tung said with a smile.
Talking to reporters, Mr. Tung said that he is currently growing durian in Da Huoai district. In early 2023, during the research process, Mr. Tung realized that Da Huoai land is quite good for growing rice, bringing high productivity and quality, so he went online to learn about this type of rice.
Mr. Tung is very happy because the rice crop at the end of 2024 has high yield and good quality.
Bags of ST25 rice are harvested and transported to the drying kiln on the same day.
"After researching online, I tried to take soil samples from my field to test. The results were completely suitable for growing ST25 rice, so I decided to test growing this rice variety in Quang Ngai commune.
In 2023, I will grow about 2.6 hectares of ST25 rice organically, without using chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Therefore, the cost of growing organic ST25 rice is higher than the cost of growing conventional rice for local people," Mr. Tung shared.
Mr. Tung also said that at first, buying ST25 rice variety was difficult because the owner of this rice variety was quite strict, fearing that rice grown in provinces other than Soc Trang would cause poor rice quality, affecting productivity.
With his connections, Mr. Tung bought 1 ton of ST25 standard rice seeds for experimental planting in Quang Ngai commune. The results were beyond expectation, Mr. Tung harvested a good yield of about 15 tons of rice.

Water leading to the rice fields is also de-aluminated by Mr. Tung before use.
"After harvesting the rice, I milled the rice and sent it to a friend who specializes in selling specialty rice to try and evaluate the ST25 rice in Lam Dong compared to rice grown in Soc Trang. This friend said that the rice grown in Lam Dong has good quality, long grains, fragrant, and has a sweet aftertaste.
After receiving positive feedback from my friend, I started selling rice and sold out all the rice I collected in more than 2 months at 40,000 VND/kg," Mr. Tung shared.
Talking about the technique of growing ST25 rice in Lam Dong, Mr. Tung said that he grows two crops a year but has to space them out to let the soil rest. Before planting, Mr. Tung uses a tiller to loosen the soil in the field and then dry it. After that, the soil is flushed with water to loosen it one more time before planting.
Meanwhile, Mr. Tung leads rice water to a settling pond to remove alum before releasing it into the fields. "The rice is grown organically, so it takes me about 105 days to grow it, while other rice varieties of the people only take 90 days to be harvested," said Mr. Tung.
After harvesting, rice is brought to the dryer.
In 2024, with the above area, Mr. Tung will also sow ST25 and harvest about 15 tons of rice. It is expected that after milling, Mr. Tung will get about 7 tons of finished rice, selling at 40,000 VND/kg. At the same time, Mr. Tung will also sell more than 1 ton of bran and more than 1 ton of broken rice, the proceeds from which will be enough to cover the costs of loading, drying, and milling the rice.
Holding a handful of rice in his hand, Mr. Tung shared with reporters: "After harvesting rice from the field, I will bring it to the factory to dry the rice, not drying it on the ground to maintain the quality of the rice grains. After drying, the rice will rest for about 24 hours, leaving the rice grains to avoid breakage when milling. After that, the rice is bagged and I bring it to Bien Hoa (Dong Nai) to divide the bags and vacuum seal before bringing it to market."
Currently, Mr. Tung has sold 3.5 tons of ST25 rice. Mr. Tung hopes that in the coming time, the weather will be favorable for him to continue growing ST25 rice in Lam Dong.
It is expected that this rice crop, Mr. Tung will harvest about 7 tons of rice, selling at 40,000 VND/kg.
The leader of the Department of Agriculture of Da Huoai district said that currently in the district there are about 170 hectares of ST25 rice growing area. Of which, Cat Tien town has 60 hectares, Quang Ngai, Nam Ninh, Gia Vien communes have 50 hectares and Da Teh town has over 60 hectares.
"In recent years, many people have grown ST25 rice locally because it is a delicious, high-quality rice. However, the rice yield is low, so farmers are not interested, so the planting area has decreased. At the same time, finding standard rice varieties is very difficult, and farmers are also afraid to buy non-standard rice varieties, which affects the yield and quality of rice," informed the leader of the Department of Agriculture of Da Huoai district.
