According to ethnologists, the Thuy ethnic group likely originated from an ancient group of people who migrated from the northern border region to Vietnam many generations ago.
The long-term residence in the locality has formed a community that, although small in number, has a distinct cultural identity. The Thuy people currently mainly have 3 family lines: Ly, Mung and Ban.

The Thuy people have their own language, which they have heard since birth and has been passed down through generations. The language has contributed to preserving ancient stories, unique lullabies and smooth folk melodies...

The costumes of Thuy women are rustic but graceful, with the main color black combined with blue, white and red stripes in harmony in the details of the collar, sleeves, belt, skirt and headscarf.

There was a time when the Thuy people were “outside the list of Vietnamese ethnic groups”. They had no ethnic code and were not recorded in the official population management system. This meant that they had difficulty accessing support policies from the State.
However, thanks to the participation of local authorities and functional agencies, especially the provincial police force, the establishment of legal identity, dissemination of laws, and inclusion of Thuy people in the residential system have gradually been completed.

The presence of the Thuy people in Thuong Minh village is a vivid demonstration of the diversity in unity of the Vietnamese ethnic community. They live in harmony with the Tay, Dao, Pa Then ethnic groups, sharing festivals and folk games, and together fostering a healthy community life.
Although the population is small, the language, traditions and culture of the Thuy ethnic group have contributed to the cultural diversity of Lam Binh district.

Nowadays, many young Thuy people have become students, commune and village cadres. They are both a bridge between the community and the government and seeds of new culture.
Realizing the risk of "disappearance" of the ethnic group, Tuyen Quang province has implemented a scientific research project on the origin and culture of the Thuy people, contributing to identifying and creating a foundation for this ethnic group to have a clearer position in the cultural space of Vietnamese ethnic groups.
In the context of Tuyen Quang province in general and Lam Binh district in particular, which is aiming to develop cultural-ecological tourism , the uniqueness of the Thuy people can completely become a distinct highlight. The original values of a little-known ethnic group are attractive to tourists, especially researchers, photographers, and people working in experiential tourism.
