The lawsuit alleged that users were tricked into purchasing subscriptions they couldn't actually share, resulting in wasted money. Despite maintaining its innocence, Apple agreed to pay $25 million to settle the matter rather than face a costly legal battle.
The question is, who is eligible for compensation? This is stated in the settlement agreement, which says: "All individuals who initiated a subscription purchase through the App Store, excluding Apple apps, between June 21, 2015, and January 30, 2019, while being members of a Family Sharing group with at least one other member at the time of purchase, and who were residents of the United States at the time of purchase."
Simply put, if a user meets the following criteria, they may be eligible to receive compensation from Apple: (1) being a member of the Family Sharing group with at least one other person participating between June 2015 and January 2019; (2) living in the U.S. during that time; (3) purchasing non-Apple paid apps through the App Store during that time.
The exact amount depends on the number of complainants but can be up to $50 per person. Eligible users have until March 1, 2024, to file a complaint by visiting the Family Sharing Plan lawsuit website. The final hearing will be held on April 2, 2024, to finalize the settlement.
