According to WION , in an interview with Reuters after the third quarter 2023 earnings report, Apple's leader said: "In China, we set a quarterly record for iPhone in the third quarter. We have 4 of the 5 best-selling smartphones in China."
Huawei's Rise in China Looks Like It's Haunting Apple
Cook said Apple gained market share in China in the July-September period despite a decline in the overall smartphone market. He added that the company expected iPhone sales to increase in the holiday quarter.
According to research firm Canalys, total smartphone sales in China fell 3% in the third quarter of 2023 compared to the same period last year. This was explained by consumers buying fewer smartphones amid a weak economic recovery. However, Huawei saw strong sales growth in the same quarter, with the Mate 60 Pro causing a stir around the world when it came with an advanced chip manufactured by China's SMIC and developed by Huawei despite US sanctions.
Despite Cook’s assurances, Apple said its overall sales fell 2.5%, partly due to lower sales of Macs and iPads. During Apple’s fiscal year 2023 (October 2022 through September 2023), three of the four quarters will see sales decline in China.
Commenting on the iPhone's appeal in China in the coming time, research firm Counterpoint Research said "The latest iPhone line underperformed in China in Q3/2023 due to a shorter launch period as well as supply constraints for the iPhone 15 Pro Max model, but things could improve in the final quarter of the year with strong sales performance during the 11.11 event".
