According to Polish Radio (Polskie Radio), speaking at a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky when the leader visited Warsaw, Mr. Tusk stated: "Poland's presidency will break the deadlock that has been evident in recent months. We will work together with Ukraine and European partners to speed up the accession process."
Prime Minister Tusk also stressed that protecting Ukraine "is a strategic defense measure for Poland and the entire West", and pledged to continue providing aid and weapons to Kiev.
The head of the Polish government also expressed confidence that the United States would cooperate with Ukraine and Europe on security if the parties seriously faced security challenges.
For his part, President Zelensky affirmed: "The independence of Ukraine is directly linked to the independence of Poland", describing closer relations between the EU and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) as "very important for enhancing the geopolitical position of Europe".
He also expressed hope that the US would continue to step up support for Kiev in its conflict with Russia after President-elect Donald Trump takes office next week, reiterating that Ukraine was seeking “strong” security guarantees and calling for support for the country’s armed forces as the conflict nears its fourth year.
Referring to the idea of deploying foreign troops in Ukraine, President Zelensky said that this is only part of security guarantees and that this alone is not enough. He will discuss this issue with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
The head of the conflict-ridden Eastern European country also revealed that Ukraine has stepped up domestic arms production and is now producing about 33-34% of its total weapons, while the EU supplies 30% and the US supplies 40%.
In another development, the President of Ukraine announced that Kiev had brought 25 people home in a prisoner exchange with Russia. Earlier, the Russian Defense Ministry said that the two countries had conducted a prisoner exchange at a rate of 25 people for 25 people, with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) acting as an intermediary.
