Speaking after Bayern Munich's 0-1 defeat to Benfica on June 25th, Ballack criticized midfielder Leroy Sane and coach Vincent Kompany. Ballack argued that a player who has already agreed to move to another club should not continue playing for Bayern.
"His performance was a huge disappointment," Ballack said. "Leroy lacked focus, personality, and seriousness in handling situations on the pitch."
In this match, coach Kompany made several changes to the starting lineup, but Sane still played the full 90 minutes. However, the German star played below expectations. This left Ballack dissatisfied, especially after witnessing Sane's inefficiency in converting opportunities into goals.
Previously, Sane decided to leave Bayern Munich to seek a new challenge at Galatasaray from the 2025/26 season. The Bundesliga champions agreed to let the German player leave as a free agent.
Despite having played 222 matches for Bayern, scoring 61 goals and providing 55 assists, Sane failed to convince Ballack. The German legend believed these numbers did not accurately reflect Sane's true abilities.
"Why did they let Leroy play the whole game when he had so little impact? Leroy had opportunities and plenty of time to shine, but he didn't perform his role well. Kompany's changes didn't work," Ballack analyzed.
Bayern will face Flamengo on June 30th in the Round of 16 of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025™.
