'Super giant' banh xeo, 'largest' banh chung appear at the 2025 Southern Traditional Cake Festival

On the morning of March 29, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Can Tho City held a press conference to announce the program of the 12th Southern Traditional Cake Festival in 2025. This festival will take place from April 4 to 8 at Binh Thuy District Square.

Instructions for making traditional cakes for tourists

At the press conference, Ms. Nguyen Thi Anh Le, Director of Can Tho City Tourism Development Center, said that this year's festival will be organized with a scale of 231 booths, including a space for traditional cakes (118 booths); a space for regional specialties (59 booths); a culinary space (40 booths) with the participation of 18 provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta region and provinces in the North, Central, and Central Highlands such as Ha Tinh, Hue, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan, Dak Lak, etc.

In particular, in addition to the booths for trading, selling, and serving locals and tourists, the organizers also arranged a space for making rice paper, recreating the Thuan Hung rice paper craft village (Thot Not district, Can Tho city) along with an area for artisans to instruct on how to make some traditional Southern cakes such as wrapping banh it, banh tet, banh kep, banh phu linh, banh tam se tay... for visitors and students to experience.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Diep, Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee, informed that one of the notable new points at this year's Southern Traditional Cake Festival is that the organizing committee will reduce 25% of the rental fee for artisans (from 8 million VND/booth to 6 million VND/booth), in order to create conditions for artisans participating in the festival to have more new creativity, bringing more interesting and attractive things.

At the press conference, the organizers also announced two "highlight" activities of this year's Southern Traditional Cake Festival.

The first is to continue pouring the "super giant" pancake with a circumference of 9m with a filling of Muscovy duck meat, shrimp and especially 100 Nha Trang lobsters. This is the largest pancake ever and is larger than the giant pancake made at the Southern Folk Cake Festival in 2024.

In the second event, Mr. Do Thanh Truc - Chairman of the Can Tho City Chefs Association - said that this year's cake festival will also feature the largest banh chung in the Mekong Delta to introduce to visitors. This cake measures 1.9m x 1.9m, is 0.8m thick, weighs more than 30kg, and was cooked by 20 artisans within 24 hours.

"The cake will be made from "OM" rice grown from Hau River Farm, green beans and pork are also carefully selected and delicious," Mr. Truc added.

Add 2 more parking spots to serve customers

At the press conference, Mr. Le Phuoc Loi, Vice Chairman of Binh Thuy District People's Committee, said that this year, 2 more parking lots will be added, bringing the total to 6 parking lots to serve visitors to the festival.

Responding to a reporter's question about the "overcharging" of parking fees that has been occurring for many years, Mr. Loi said he was also upset about this issue. Learning from previous events, this year the district will widely publicize the posted prices at parking lots and where parking is allowed.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Diep added: "I have directed to publicly post parking prices and to inform people in the surrounding area not to set up spontaneous parking lots. If there are violations, they will be handled according to regulations. Hopefully this time will be better, and order will be restored compared to previous years."
