Ensuring electricity supply for the development of Con Co special economic zone

Mr. Nguyen Thanh, Chairman of the Board of Members of the Central Power Corporation (EVNCPC), said that the Electricity sector took over the power grid on Con Co Island in August 2017. Since then, EVNCPC has invested in infrastructure and power source construction projects with a total investment of nearly 23 billion VND. Currently, the power source on the island is provided by a system of 3 diesel generators with a total capacity of 1,250kVA combined with a rooftop solar power system with a capacity of 55kW.

The low-voltage grid system consists of 2 twisted-pair cable lines with a length of 3.2 km, with a maximum load capacity on the island of 235 kW (June 2025). Electricity revenue in 2024 is 1,459 million VND. Each year, EVNCPC compensates for a loss of about 7 billion VND to provide electricity on Con Co Island. However, the unit continues to ensure safe, continuous and stable electricity supply to serve the needs of daily life, production, business and security - defense on the island.

EVNCPC Board of Members Chairman Nguyen Thanh added that, according to the survey, the shortest distance from the mainland to the island is about 27km, if an underground cable system is built to connect to the national grid to Con Co Island, the investment will be very large. In the long term, EVNCPC leaders hope that Quang Tri province will continue to propose to the State a special mechanism to create favorable conditions for investment in power sources and grids to supply Con Co Island, contributing to speeding up the implementation of the project "Developing Con Co special economic zone strong in economy , stable in national defense and security".
