The New York Times reported that President-elect Donald Trump is seeking to reform energy and environmental policies to eliminate programs that hinder US economic growth, including withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement.
The New York Times, citing sources familiar with the matter, reported that Mr. Trump’s energy and environmental transition team has prepared “a series of executive orders and presidential statements on climate and energy,” including the US abandoning the Paris Agreement, the international treaty on climate change adopted in 2015.

Reshaping the boundaries of the Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments in Utah to make way for drilling and oil exploration is also on the Trump administration’s agenda. This is a protected area that President Joe Biden expanded in 2021. According to sources familiar with the matter, Trump’s team will also eliminate Biden’s environmental justice initiative, which advocates for clean energy development and pollution reduction. This involves ending the moratorium on new natural gas export terminal permits, among other things. The US newspaper noted that Trump is planning to appoint an “energy czar” to replace Biden’s “climate chief.” The role is expected to be dedicated to streamlining policies related to oil, gas and coal production to boost supply rather than curb demand. Two names being considered for the new position are North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, who helped free up millions of acres of public land for shale gas drilling, and former Energy Secretary Dan Brouillette. Trump’s plans for a second term are expected to include moving federal agencies, including the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), out of Washington. During his re-election campaign, Trump argued that such departments and agencies should be moved to “places where people love America.” While EPA employees disagree with the move, Trump allies insist that the model for the move is based on reversing the policies of the Biden administration, which hired “hundreds of employees” on Biden’s first day in office to implement climate change initiatives. At UN climate talks last year, the US and other countries agreed to phase out oil, gas and coal to combat global climate change. But initial calls for a “complete phase-out” of fossil fuels were rejected by major oil exporters such as Saudi Arabia and Iraq. One of Mr Trump’s campaign promises was to end renewable energy projects, calling them a “scam”. The Republican has said that affordable energy is vital to the US economy.Vietnamnet.vn
