Tap water
This is a great tip for travelers to any country, but especially to tropical countries with a plethora of strange bacteria your body has never encountered before. We never had any problems brushing our teeth with tap water in Vietnam, but the risk can be for anyone who drinks it.
Diverse street food in Vietnam for tourists to explore
Strange meat
We don’t mean street meat, because the street food in Vietnam is amazing. Seriously, get out of your hotel and try all the street food you can find. The food carts and sidewalk eateries here are consistently rated as some of the best in the world . What we mean is the meat is processed and sold cheaply. You can’t really even tell what kind of meat it is. It’s not dangerous, but your stomach won’t be happy.
Sidewalk Coffee
Competition for coffee in Vietnam is fierce and some places have increased their profits by mixing in cheaper ingredients. It’s best to pay a little more and go to a well-established coffee shop. And even better, go to a place where the coffee is made right in front of the customer.
Uncooked vegetables
You won't be able to avoid dirty vegetables, but at least cooked vegetables won't upset your stomach and ruin your vacation.
Blood pudding
Tiet canh is a traditional dish, popular in the North, made from duck or pig blood. If that is not enough to convince you, then remember that pig blood has a high chance of containing some dangerous bacteria that can be fatal or contaminated when processed.
Blood pudding is a dish that many foreign newspapers advise tourists to avoid.
Puffer fish and toad meat
There are still deaths from eating puffer fish every year and to avoid being one of them, it's best not to eat puffer fish.
Also, frogs are common in Vietnamese cuisine, so you don’t have to worry about them. In fact, you should try a frog dish, it’s quite delicious. However, toads are best avoided. Their skin and some organs contain bufotoxin, which can be fatal if not treated properly.
Cold soup
If your bowl of pho isn’t hot enough to burn the back of your throat, you definitely shouldn’t be eating it. Hot soups are hot for a reason in Vietnam: The heat kills all the bad stuff that wants to mess with your gut. This is why there’s really no cold soup in Vietnam.
Dog meat
What is the difference between livestock and dogs? We will not get into this debate, because that is not the reason we put dog meat on the list. The reason we put it here is because there are people who steal dogs from families and sell them to dog meat restaurants. Pets being stolen and sold for meat is not something that should be supported.
Hoi An is the city that says no to dog and cat meat in Vietnam.
Fruit with edible skin
For things like oranges and bananas, there is no need to worry as we do not eat the peel. But you should be wary of fruits like apples and guavas. Always wash the fruit thoroughly before eating is the best way to avoid risks.
