Barcelona bought few players but targeted the right ones.

Joan Garcia and Marcus Rashford have arrived, but Barca's transfer market is far from closed as Flick targets a quality full-back.

Barcelona have successfully secured Marcus Rashford on loan.

Barcelona's 2025 summer transfer window is moving at a breakneck pace. The "Blaugrana" are not only swiftly securing key targets but are also planning their next moves to complete their squad.

Despite bringing in two quality new signings for just over 26 million euros – a bargain far exceeding initial expectations – Hansi Flick isn't ready to stop. The German manager still craves a top-class full-back to add depth and tactical flexibility for his ambitious season.

Clever moves

The Joan Garcia transfer is a prime example of the decisiveness of Barca's sporting department. This was an opportunity not to be missed: any delay could have meant the young goalkeeper slipping away forever. Sporting Director Deco and coach Hansi Flick understood that to build a solid defense, Barca had to start with the goalkeeping position. Activating the release clause, thus bringing Joan Garcia to Camp Nou in a flash, not only strengthened the current defense but also represented a long-term investment.

After securing a solid goal, Barca's next objective was to strengthen their attack. However, this path proved more difficult than expected. Nico Williams once again refused, while Luis Díaz – Deco's dream player – was held tightly by Liverpool, not to mention Bayern Munich entering the race.

Instead of rushing into a pointless €70 million bidding war, Barca withdrew and turned to Marcus Rashford, a more economical but potentially promising option. This deal is not only financially sound but also creates space for the club to continue dreaming of other signings.

After failing to sign Nico Williams, Barcelona immediately came up with a Plan B.

Barca believe that registering Rashford and Joan García will not be a problem, even if Ter Stegen is sidelined for an extended period. The club expects to implement the 1:1 rule by early August – a point when all transfer decisions will become crucial.

Flick and Deco both recognize that the squad has an "excess" of players in certain positions, particularly center-backs and midfielders. If an offer is attractive enough, Barca are willing to part ways with a few players to free up salary space and balance the budget.

This proactive approach will determine whether Barca can complete another important signing – a full-back – before the transfer window closes.

Hansi Flick and the wing-back dilemma.

Flick has made no secret of his desire to add a top-class left-back, preferably a left-footed player, to "insure" the future of Jofre Torrens – a raw talent predicted to be Barca's number one left-back for the next few years. However, Torrens still needs time to develop, and Flick understands that big matches cannot be won solely on potential.

In negotiations, Grimaldo (Bayer Leverkusen) is a notable option. Barca have made some inquiries, but everything remains open. On the opposite flank, Denzel Dumfries (Inter) is a strong contender with a €25 million fee – his release clause expires in 10 days. Dumfries is a complete defender, capable of covering the entire right flank, and Flick really likes this type of versatile player.

Hansi Flick's Barcelona are not looking to stop in the transfer market.

The problem is that Barca needs to sell some players before spending money on the Dumfries deal. Time is running out, and this is when the management needs to act decisively if they want to realize the head coach's wishes.

Following the Rashford deal, things are far from over. Barca will continue to listen to offers for players who are no longer in their plans. A squad overhaul could open up a great opportunity for Flick to find the perfect "piece" for his system.

If a full-back like Grimaldo or Dumfries were to arrive at Camp Nou, Barca would not only complete their squad but also upgrade their tactical strength. Flick is renowned for making the most of wingers, and having another quality winger would make Barca even more unpredictable in both La Liga and the Champions League.

Barcelona is demonstrating a smart transfer strategy: not spending money recklessly, but knowing when to make decisive moves. Joan Garcia is a guarantee in goal, Rashford is a potential gamble in attack, and now a top-class full-back is the final target to complete the picture.

August will be a heated period, not only on the pitch but also at the negotiating table. If Flick can secure the defender he desires, Barca could enter the new season with a squad that is deep enough, flexible enough, and most importantly, competitive enough for all titles.
