Barcelona buys few but targets right

Joan Garcia and Marcus Rashford have arrived, but Barca's transfer window is not yet closed as Flick targets a quality full-back.

Barcelona have just successfully loaned Marcus Rashford.

Barcelona's 2025 summer transfer window is moving at breakneck speed. The Blaugrana have not only completed key signings quickly, but are also calculating their next move to complete their squad.

Despite having brought in two quality players for just over 26 million euros – a figure that is too “good” compared to initial expectations – Hansi Flick is not ready to stop. The German coach still craves a world-class full-back, to increase depth and tactical flexibility for an ambitious season.

Smart moves

The Joan Garcia deal is a prime example of the decisiveness of the Barca sporting department. This was an opportunity not to be missed: if delayed, the young goalkeeper could slip away forever. Sporting Director Deco and coach Hansi Flick understood that to create a solid defense, Barca had to start from the goal. The activation of the release clause, thereby bringing Joan García to Camp Nou in the “blink of an eye”, not only strengthened the present but also represented a long-term investment.

After “locking down” the goal, Barca’s next goal was to strengthen their attack. However, this path was more difficult than expected. Nico Williams once again refused, while Luis Díaz - Deco’s “dream man” - was held back by Liverpool, not to mention Bayern Munich jumping in to compete.

Instead of rushing into a meaningless €70 million race, Barca withdrew and turned to Marcus Rashford, a cost-effective but potential option. This deal is not only financially reasonable but also creates space for the club to continue "dreaming" about other contracts.

After failing to buy Nico Williams, Barcelona immediately had a plan B.

Barca believe that signing Rashford and Joan García will be easy, even if Ter Stegen is out for the long term. The club are expected to implement the 1:1 rule in early August - when any transfer decisions will be crucial.

Flick and Deco both see the squad as having “surplus” in some positions, especially in central defence and midfield. If there is an attractive enough offer, Barca is willing to part with a few names to free up the wage bill and balance the budget.

It is this initiative that will determine whether Barca can make another important signing - a full-back - before the transfer window closes.

Hansi Flick and the full-back problem

Flick has made no secret of his desire to add a top-class full-back, preferably a left-footer, to “insure” the future of Jofre Torrens, a rough diamond who is expected to be Barca’s number one left-back in the next few years. However, Torrens still needs time to develop, and Flick understands that big games cannot be based solely on potential.

On the negotiating table, Grimaldo (Bayer Leverkusen) is a notable option. Barca has made a probing move, but everything is still open. On the opposite wing, Denzel Dumfries (Inter) is a bright choice with a fee of 25 million euros - the release clause will expire in the next 10 days. Dumfries is a complete defender, capable of covering the right wing, and Flick really likes this type of versatile player.

Hansi Flick's Barcelona are not stopping in the transfer market.

The problem is that Barca must sell players before spending money on Dumfries. Time is running out, and this is the time for the board to act decisively if they want to realize the head coach's wishes.

After the Rashford deal, things are not over yet. Barca will continue to listen to offers for players who are no longer in their plans. A squad clean-up could open up a great opportunity for Flick to add the perfect "piece" to his system.

A full-back like Grimaldo or Dumfries would not only complete the squad but also improve Barca’s tactical capabilities. Flick is known for making the most of his wingers, and adding a quality winger would make Barca more unpredictable in both La Liga and the Champions League.

Barcelona are showing a smart shopping strategy: not splashing money, but knowing when to make decisive moves. Joan Garcia is the goalkeeping anchor, Rashford is a potential gamble up front, and now a top-class full-back is the final target to complete the picture.

August will be a heated time, not only on the pitch but also at the negotiating table. If Flick gets the defender he wants, Barca could enter the new season with a squad that is deep enough, flexible enough and most importantly - capable of competing for every title.
