Arrest of suspect operating XSS.is hacker forum

A suspected administrator of the XSS.is cybercrime forum was arrested in Ukraine in a joint operation between Ukrainian, French and Europol authorities, French prosecutors said on July 23.

According to industry experts, XSS.is is one of the "underground markets" specializing in buying and selling data and malware, operating for a long time on the dark web, with about 50,000 users.

Specifically, in a statement, French prosecutor Laure Beccuau said an individual suspected of being the administrator of the XSS.is forum was arrested on July 22, within the framework of a criminal investigation launched by the Paris Prosecutor's Office.

Ms. Beccuau said the forum, which has been active since 2013, was one of the main hubs for cybercrime-related activities, including the sale of malware, access to compromised systems, stolen data, and ransomware-related services.

The forum also operates a Jabber encrypted messaging server, allowing anonymous parties to exchange information, she added.

The investigation was launched in July 2021 and was transferred to the investigating judge in November of the same year. According to Ms. Beccuau, on November 9, 2021, the French authorities opened a judicial investigation into allegations of complicity in attacks on automated data processing systems, organized extortion and criminal conspiracy,

According to the prosecution, messages intercepted during the investigation revealed numerous illegal activities related to cybercrime and ransomware, with a total profit of at least $7 million.

French and European authorities are stepping up cooperation in arrests related to cybercrime, as the number of cyberattacks targeting state agencies and private businesses continues to increase./.
