According to a newly published report on the information security risk situation in Vietnam by Viettel Cyber Security Company (VCS), 2024 witnessed a significant increase in information security threats.
Specifically, ransomware groups such as Lockbit and Blackcat continue to expand their operations, causing serious damage with more than 10TB of encrypted data and a ransom demand of nearly $11 million. These attacks not only encrypt data but also combine information theft to increase ransom pressure.
The number of distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks reached more than 924,000, an increase of 34% compared to the previous year, focusing on the financial, technology and public service sectors.
More than 4,000 phishing domains were recorded in Vietnam in 2024, down about 30% from the previous year. However, the number of fake sites using unauthorized brands increased 3 times.
These campaigns are becoming more sophisticated by applying artificial intelligence (AI) technology to create fake emails and websites, targeting the financial and public service sectors, causing financial losses and reducing the brand reputation of organizations.

According to a recent survey by the National Cyber Security Association, the total damage caused by online fraud in 2024 is estimated to reach VND18,900 billion.
The three most common forms in 2024 include: luring users into fake investment schemes, promising high profits; impersonating the identity of agencies and organizations; and fraudulent announcements of big prizes and promotions.
Mr. Vu Ngoc Son, Head of Technology Department, National Cyber Security Association, predicts that online fraud attacks will continue to rage in 2025.
"In addition to measures from management agencies, users still need to raise their vigilance and safety skills when participating in cyberspace. Do not share personal information with strangers or untrusted services. Carefully verify any calls or exchanges related to money transfers. Use the nTrust anti-fraud application to filter and block fraudulent phone numbers and malicious websites," said Mr. Son.
