Bundesliga 2025 returns with fans expecting a dramatic championship race. But looking at the big picture, the familiar scenario is likely to repeat itself: Bayern Munich continues to consolidate its monopoly, while the rest of the league struggles to find a place in the “supporting role”.

Bayern Munich and the rest of the Bundesliga

Last season, Bayern regained the Bundesliga silver plate with a gap of 13 points, after being dethroned by Bayer Leverkusen in 2024. That once again proved that, even when there are moments of off-beat, the "Gray Tigers" still know how to return to the top.

Vincent Kompany, who caused controversy when he was relegated with Burnley, has surprisingly had great success in Germany. Given the strongest squad and the most abundant budget, he led Bayern to the championship with absolute conviction. Questions remain about their ability to conquer the top of Europe, but in the domestic arena, Kompany and his students show no signs of wavering.

Harry Kane is the epitome of that dominance. After two seasons, he has scored 85 goals, virtually privatising the Bundesliga top scorer title. With Luis Diaz - a £65m signing from Liverpool - scoring in the German Super Cup, Kane now has a source of quality following the departure of Leroy Sane and the long-term injury of Jamal Musiala. Bayern no longer have Thomas Muller, but they still have the depth and charisma to turn the void into an opportunity to rebuild.

In the Bundesliga picture, that stability and ability to add on time makes Bayern continue to be an insurmountable mountain.

Can Erik ten Hag help Leverkusen overthrow Bayern Munich?

If 2024 was a fairy tale when Leverkusen first stepped up to the Bundesliga throne, then just one year later, the whole dream collapsed. Xabi Alonso left the coach's position to replace Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid, Florian Wirtz - the best player of the tournament - moved to Liverpool for £116 million, while Jonathan Tah joined Bayern in the familiar "gut-draining rule".

Not stopping there, Granit Xhaka went to Sunderland, captain goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky went to Monaco. The pieces that made up the historic championship all left one by one, leaving new coach Erik ten Hag with a team that had lost both its spirit and its identity.

Ten Hag is renowned for his ability to develop young players, and Leverkusen have also brought in a number of young talents from the Eredivisie and England. But those are steps for the future. Leverkusen are clearly weaker now, and can hardly dream of recreating the miracles of the past.

In that context, Borussia Dortmund became the most expected name to stop Bayern. Last season, they fell to 11th place, but under the hands of Niko Kovac, Dortmund made a miraculous acceleration to finish in the top 4. In the 2023/24 season, the representative of the Ruhr region also reached the Champions League final.

This season, they have retained Serhou Guirassy - the Bundesliga's most lethal striker - and recruited Jobe Bellingham, Jude's younger brother. With a young, hungry squad, plus the return of European flair, Dortmund could become Bayern's biggest rival.

But the harsh reality is that the gap is still too far. Bayern has a well-balanced squad, superior squad depth and especially a winning habit. Dortmund can make it difficult for Bayern in a few rounds, but maintaining stability throughout 34 rounds is an unsolved problem.

Serhou Guirassy remains at Borussia Dortmund.

RB Leipzig were once expected to be a “dark horse” but last season fell to 7th place - their worst performance since promotion. Despite earning a huge amount of money from the sale of Benjamin Sesko and preparing to say goodbye to Xavi Simons, their squad is clearly not strong enough to compete.

Eintracht Frankfurt, who finished third last season, have opted to sell Omar Marmoush and Hugo Ekitike. Once again, Frankfurt’s “player trading machine” has been financially efficient, but has left a huge void on the pitch.

Stuttgart, runners-up in 2024, dropped to ninth last season, despite consolation from the German Cup. They managed to retain young talent Nick Woltemade despite Bayern's interest, but that was not enough to compete in the long term.

All of this shows one thing: the teams that were once considered potential challengers are in the process of rebuilding and cannot immediately become rivals.

Hamburg and Köln, the two traditional giants, are back in the Bundesliga. Their presence creates a lively atmosphere, especially with the upcoming Hamburg-St. Pauli derby. But in reality, their goal is only to stay in the league. They have no say in the championship race.

Bundesliga – one-way race resumes

German football is famous for its financial balance, the strength of its small and medium-sized clubs, and the exciting atmosphere at every match. But what makes the league less attractive than the Premier League or La Liga is the boring championship race.

Since 2012, Leverkusen has only broken the monopoly once, the rest have belonged to Bayern. And the 2025 season starts with the same scenario: Bayern is strong, the opponents disband or rebuild, no one is strong enough to create a surprise.

Bayern Munich is considered too strong compared to the rest.

The Bundesliga is certainly still attractive with the race for European places, the traditional derbies and the relegation battle. But at the top of the table, the risk of Bayern "going it alone" is looming. And once again, fans have to admit: Bayern consolidates its power, while the German league is unlikely to escape the old scenario.

There is no denying that Bayern Munich is the pride of German football, a club that has always maintained the highest level of class and professionalism. But this long-term dominance has become a double-edged sword. It has turned the Bundesliga into a one-sided race, reducing its appeal to international audiences who prefer unpredictable scenarios and fierce competition.

The Premier League retains its appeal thanks to the diversity of the championship race, La Liga at least has Real Madrid and Barcelona competing, Serie A has seen unexpected breakthroughs. Meanwhile, the Bundesliga is stuck in a cycle: Bayern are almost automatically champions, while the rest are fighting for smaller goals.

If other clubs are not strong enough to break the monopoly, the Bundesliga will inevitably fall behind in the race to globalize football. And that is the biggest worry: a tournament rich in tradition, possessing the most passionate stands in Europe, but increasingly lacking in appeal just because the silver plate has almost only one destination.
