North: Rain stops, many places still flooded

On August 22, Hanoi and many places in the North were sunny again after many days of rain. Meanwhile, some mountainous areas still had heavy rain, causing flooding.

Updated data from the Vrain automatic rain gauge system until the afternoon of August 22, places with heavy rain such as: Tuyen Quang 220mm, Lao Cai 117mm, Phu Tho 99mm, Son La 72mm, Dien Bien 71mm, Ho Chi Minh City 68mm, Cao Bang 63mm, Lai Chau 62mm, Dong Nai 52mm...

In the northwestern part of Bac Ninh province, there are places where flood water has not yet receded completely, and landslides on roads have not yet been repaired. Floods on the Thuong, Cau, and Luc Nam rivers are still rising.

In Lang Son, although the weather was sunny, on August 22, flood water still inundated many villages in Huu Lung commune.

The water level of rivers and streams has risen so much that houses in Dong Lai, Bai Vang, Na Hoa, Cau Muoi villages... are still submerged. Many areas are isolated by strong currents, and small boats cannot carry people across.

Floodwaters are still present in Huu Lung commune (Lang Son province), making damage recovery difficult.

Authorities including police and soldiers from Lang Son province and Huu Lung commune urgently swam across large bodies of water to help people.

Many villages in Huu Lung commune (Lang Son province) are still submerged in flood water, August 22.

The police force of Huu Lung commune has proactively deployed a joint combat plan with the local government, Regiment 12 (mobilizing 115 officers and soldiers), Tung Dien Traffic Police Station, local security and order, militia and self-defense forces... to support people in moving their belongings, poultry, and harvested crops to safe areas. The forces also continue to check and evacuate people still trapped in flooded areas.

Similarly, in Van Linh commune, floodwaters were still rising. At noon on August 22, many villages were still flooded, making it impossible for people to harvest fruits at the right time.

Mr. Hoang Xuan Anh, Secretary of the Van Linh Commune Party Committee, said that because the commune is located in the middle of a mountain range, when it rains heavily, water from the ravines flows down quickly, causing many areas to be deeply flooded. Currently, property, crops and fruit trees have been severely affected. Lung Na and Lung Gio villages are still isolated.

Custard apple is the main crop of Van Linh commune with about 700 hectares in harvest season. Rising floodwaters caused many trees to break branches and fruits to fall en masse. To reduce damage, the local authorities mobilized local forces along with Regiment 141 and the Lang Son Provincial Military Command to support people in transporting fruits out of flooded areas to deliver to traders. The work was carried out urgently to prevent agricultural products from spoiling.

The rain has stopped but the southern part of Lang Son province is still submerged in water valleys.

In Thai Nguyen province, on August 22, authorities and residents in Bac Kan ward urgently mobilized to clean up and overcome the consequences of prolonged heavy rain that caused many roads, houses and schools to be deeply submerged in mud.

According to Mr. Dinh Huy Hoang, Chairman of Bac Kan Ward People's Committee, the biggest concern now is cleaning up mud at schools as the new school year is approaching. At Bac Kan Secondary School, the school yard is lower than the road surface, so every time it rains heavily, mud flows into the campus. Due to the large amount of mud, on August 21 and 22, many parents proactively came to clean up to have a place for their students to study soon. Initially, the 6th grade class was scheduled to start on August 22 but had to be postponed to August 25.
