Khanh Hoa General Hospital saves life of dangerous foreign object choking case

On September 19, the leader of Khanh Hoa General Hospital said that the hospital's medical team had just successfully removed a foreign object in a dangerous position from a patient in Dak Lak.

Accordingly, patient NBD (1 year old, Tuy An Bac commune, Dak Lak province) was admitted to Khanh Hoa General Hospital in a state of pain when swallowing, hoarseness, and fatigue. Through examination and paraclinical imaging results, it was found that the patient had a foreign object located right under the subglottis (below the vocal cords). This is an extremely dangerous position, which can threaten the patient's life if the foreign object is not removed promptly. Faced with the risk of respiratory failure due to the patient's foreign object choking, that night, the hospital's interdisciplinary team of ENT, Anesthesia and Resuscitation and Bronchoscopy was urgently mobilized to consult and determine treatment options on the basis of ensuring the patient is provided with enough oxygen to breathe on his own without the need for a tracheostomy, and to perform endoscopy to remove the foreign object. After nearly 3 hours, the foreign object, a chicken bone about 5cm long, was successfully removed by the medical team. Currently, the patient is conscious and in stable health.

Specialist Doctor I Ha Thi Phuong Thao - Department of Internal Medicine and Neurology, Khanh Hoa General Hospital said that foreign objects falling in the subglottis are extremely dangerous because they will quickly lead to edema, causing spasms and blocking the patient's airway. At the same time, it stimulates the vagus nerve, which can cause cardiac arrest and respiratory arrest. This is a very difficult case and is also the first case the hospital has received and successfully performed.

According to patient D.'s family, the child choked on a foreign object at around 8 pm on September 17. The family took the child to a nearby doctor for examination and was advised to immediately transfer the child to Khanh Hoa General Hospital to remove the foreign object.
