Landslides eat into houses and roads
After storm No. 10, households in Sa Nam hamlet, Van An commune returned from the storm shelter and found that another part of their yard had collapsed into the riverbed. After storm No. 10, the landslide had “eaten” nearly half a meter into the roadbed, and some households had to move to other places. That was the situation of 7 households in Sa Nam hamlet, Van An commune.

Mrs. Nguyen Thi Minh only dared to visit her home occasionally and was heartbroken to see the yard crack more and more each day, and parts of the outbuildings gradually collapsed into the river. “Currently, the chicken coop has collapsed into the river, the backyard and bathroom have cracked and collapsed in half, the wall of the main house also has a double crack almost as wide as a hand span. My husband, I and our children do not dare to stay in the house for long,” Mrs. Nguyen Thi Minh confided.
Pointing to the cracks in the wall of Mrs. Minh's house and 4 other households, Sa Nam hamlet chief Hoang Van Don said that after 3 storms from number 5 to number 10 directly affecting Nghe An , Sa Nam hamlet households had to continuously evacuate and avoid the storms, and each time they returned home, the yard, wall and road collapsed a little more.

“Currently, the main road running along the river through the residential area of the hamlet, especially the section running through the location of 7 households here, has also cracked in half in the middle of the road. Particularly the last section near the old Nam Dan bara bridge has collapsed 2/3 of the road; the risk of 2 nearby households, Mr. Vo Dinh Luong and Mr. Nguyen Tien Ba, not only losing the road but also having their houses collapsed into the river, if the embankment is not soon blocked” – Mr. Hoang Van Don said.
Mr. Tran Van Hien, who has a house right next to Mr. Vo Dinh Luong's house, said: "I have lived here since 1976. Before, the road along the river was much wider. Over time, especially since the dredging of the riverbed, the cracks have become deeper and deeper into the roadbed. Since the flood in 2024, the riverbed has encroached on the road by 3-5m, and the households whose houses are threatened with collapse have also lived here since the 1970s" - Mr. Hien said.

Urgent need to build embankments
The landslide situation has been inspected and recorded by authorities at all levels. Recently, during a working trip to localities, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Van De directly inspected the landslide point on the low canal bank downstream of Bara Nam Dan sluice in Van An commune.
Mr. Bui Dinh Thuy - Economic Department Specialist, Van An Commune People's Committee said: The situation of landslides on the Dao River bank from Cong Bara Nam Dan I to Cut River is as follows: The North bank (Left bank) of Sa Nam block has a phenomenon of long cracks causing land to sink into the Dao River. Currently, according to the actual scene, the length of the crack and sinking is about 152m, 2.5 to 3m wide, the crack is (30 - 50)cm wide. The traffic road of the block is 152m long and has sunk into the Dao River bank. Especially the landslide area is adjacent to the houses of 7 households in Sa Nam block.

In addition, the right bank of Phan Boi Chau block has some long cracks and small slides along the riverbank at some points. Currently, there are 19 households within the protection boundary of the irrigation works along both sides of the Dao River that have been eroded and are at high risk of erosion, including: 9 households on the left bank of Sa Nam block and 10 households on the right bank of Phan Boi Chau block. These households have settled since before 1995 until now.
Mr. Thuy added: Recently, voters of Van An commune (old Nam Dan town area) have proposed and petitioned many times about the phenomenon of subsidence and landslides of the Dao river bank from Cong Bara Nam Dan 1 to Cut river, especially the section where some households live, threatening the lives and property of the people.

However, it has not been handled or remedied yet. To ensure the safety of people's lives and property, the People's Committee of Van An commune has reported and proposed a plan to handle the above landslide to the People's Committee of Nghe An province and the Department of Agriculture and Environment. Accordingly, it is requested that the Provincial People's Committee support funding for the relocation and resettlement of households within the protection boundary of the irrigation works to a safe place. For the policy, support funding for the embankment of the Dao River from the Bara Nam Dan I culvert to the Cut River with a length of 2 km.
After storms No. 9 and No. 10, the leaders of the Provincial People's Committee also visited the scene twice to check the landslide situation in Van An hamlet and along the river through the bara culvert, belonging to Phan Boi Chau block.
People really hope that authorities at all levels and sectors will soon have measures to support and prevent landslides so that people can live in peace.
