The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has just issued a decision approving the Project to preserve and promote the value of the Xương Lý fishing festival (Quy Nhơn Đông ward, Gia Lai province) in conjunction with tourism development and new rural construction.

According to the decision, the Xương Lý fishing festival of Gia Lai fishermen, along with the Katê festival of the Cham people in Khánh Hòa, were selected for pilot implementation in the program to preserve and link intangible cultural heritage with tourism development. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism assigned the Department of Cultural Heritage to lead and coordinate with the Departments of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the two provinces and relevant units to implement the project.

The Xương Lý fishing festival, associated with the worship of whales (the God of the South Sea, Ông fish) by coastal residents, signifies a prayer for favorable weather, safe voyages for fishermen, and abundant catches of shrimp and fish. At the same time, it is also an opportunity to demonstrate solidarity and community cohesion, contributing to the preservation of the unique cultural values of the ancient Nhơn Lý coastal region.

With a history spanning over 200 years, this festival is closely linked to the formation of Truong Lang from 1815 and was officially held at Vung Nom (Xuong Ly Lagoon) in 1839. Through numerous restorations, especially since 2014, the festival has fully restored its traditional rituals and living space.

This conservation project aims not only to preserve traditional cultural values but also to create a foundation for exploiting and developing the potential of cultural and spiritual tourism, contributing to the construction of new rural areas and sustainable socio-economic development in the locality.

On December 10, 2024, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism issued Decision No. 3994/QD-BVHTTDL inscribing the Xương Lý fishing festival in the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
