The archaeological site of Pi-Ramesse, present-day Qantir, in Egypt, on the eastern edge of the Nile Delta, about 112 km northeast of Cairo, was the capital of the pharaoh Ramesses the Great (reigned c. 1279–1213 BC). Photo: @Cairo University.

It is recorded in ancient sources as a city of great beauty, power and wealth. It is estimated that 300,000 people lived in the city at its peak, making it one of the largest cities of the Late Bronze Age in the Mediterranean in both area and population. Photo: @Cairo University.

The city featured a massive temple, riverside mansions, elaborate mud-brick houses, a planned street grid, a port, a canal system, Ramesses's grand palace, industrial buildings and high-end craft workshops. Photo: @Cairo University.

At the Pi-Ramesse archaeological site, experts from Cairo University unexpectedly found an ancient mortar pit. The pit measures about 2.7 x 8.9 meters and at the bottom there is still a layer of ancient mortar. Photo: @Cairo University.

It is worth noting that at the bottom of the mortar pit there are traces of tiny feet that look like those of children between three and five years old. Archaeologists have not yet been able to determine whether these footprints were left by many children, or just one child walking back and forth leaving footprints. The reason for the appearance of the child at the bottom of this ancient mortar pit remains a big mystery to this day. Photo: @Cairo University.
