Summer, with its high temperatures and strong UV rays, makes skin prone to darkening, dehydration, and premature aging. Besides using sunscreen, many international dermatologists recommend supplementing with fruits rich in vitamin C, beta-carotene, and lycopene to help protect the skin from within.

Nicholas Perricone, a dermatologist at Yale School of Medicine, suggests that foods rich in antioxidants may help reduce the effects of stress caused by sun exposure.

Meanwhile, Howard Murad, founder of Murad Skincare and clinical instructor at UCLA, encourages increasing intake of water-rich fruits and vegetables during hot weather to help retain moisture and restore the skin's protective barrier.

Watermelon

Watermelon contains a high amount of water along with lycopene, an antioxidant that gives the fruit its characteristic red color. Lycopene has been mentioned in many studies for its ability to help reduce cell damage caused by UV rays.

Amy Wechsler, a dermatologist at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, says that foods rich in lycopene, such as watermelon or tomatoes, can help protect the skin from the effects of sun exposure when consumed regularly.

Tomato

Tomatoes are a rich source of lycopene and vitamin C. Several nutritional studies suggest that people who eat tomatoes regularly may reduce their skin's sensitivity to sunlight.

Harold Lancer, a dermatologist at Lancer Dermatology Clinic in Beverly Hills, suggests that a diet rich in antioxidants plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy skin during the summer, especially in environments with prolonged hot weather.

Ripe mangoes

Mangoes are rich in beta-carotene, a precursor to vitamin A, which helps support epidermal regeneration and increase skin resistance to UV rays. This fruit also contains vitamin C, which helps fight oxidation and supports collagen production.

Dermatologists and nutritionists often recommend eating yellow and orange fruits in the summer because of their high carotenoid content, which is beneficial for skin health.

Guava

Guava is a fruit rich in vitamin C, which helps neutralize free radicals produced when skin is exposed to sunlight for extended periods.

Whitney Bowe, a dermatologist at Whitney Bowe Beauty in New York, emphasizes that vitamin C from natural foods plays a crucial role in supporting collagen synthesis and helping the skin fight against signs of environmental aging.

Oranges and grapefruit

Oranges and grapefruits are rich in vitamin C, flavonoids, and water, which help support antioxidant activity and reduce dull skin caused by dehydration in the summer. Besides their skin benefits, grapefruits are also low in calories, making them suitable for those who want to manage their weight in hot weather.

Papaya

Papaya contains vitamins A and C and the enzyme papain, which are beneficial for skin cell regeneration. It's a fruit often recommended for consumption in the summer due to its ability to aid digestion and help skin recover from sun exposure.

Dermatologists note that fruits only help protect the skin from the inside and cannot replace sunscreen. To minimize the harmful effects of UV rays, it is still necessary to use broad-spectrum sunscreen, wear sun-protective clothing, wear a wide-brimmed hat, and avoid going outside during peak sunlight hours.
